Southern Boobook Owl
Like hawks and eagles, owls are called raptors, or birds of prey, which means they use sharp talons and curved bills to hunt, kill, and eat other animals. Most owls have huge heads, stocky bodies, soft feathers, short tails, and a reversible toe that can point either forward or backward. Owl’s eyes face forward, like humans do. Most owl species are active at night, not in the daytime.
This curious-looking owl is what they call a Southern Boobook Owl, the smallest and most common owl in Australia. Like other owl species, the Southern Boobook is nocturnal. They are often observed perched on an open branch or tree-top, emitting a distinctive ‘boo-book’ call. Its surprised look because of its round eyes makes it even cuter.
