A Vintage Robbery
This story reveals that the idea of a large-scale heist is not a new phenomenon. In fact, I suspect that the success of these criminals likely inspired some of the other robbers on our list. The masterminds behind the Great Train Robber got away with the equivalent of $74 million in today’s money, all of which was never recovered.
Despite not finding the money, the police were able to arrest most of the gang members who committed this crime. But what’s surprising is the punishment they received. Considering it was such a massive theft at the time, are you also a bit shocked that the gang leaders only received a 30-year prison sentence? I imagine many people have been locked away for longer as a result of lesser crimes.
