#9: WWI Veterans in First Racewalk Event
This image might look inconsequential, but it has a very significant meaning. This photograph depicts a group of blind WWI veterans taking part in the first-ever racewalk event in London in 1922. The Blind Veterans UK organization takes part in an annual racewalk that has become a tradition. This image is the first event of its kind ever held in London.
Many WWI veterans experienced blindness as a result of shrapnel and toxic gases used during the World War. Trauma and rehabilitation were handled differently back in the early 20th century, but this racewalk was a way to encourage veterans to get out and navigate the world on their own. This first event was such a hit that Blind Veterans UK has continued the tradition ever since.
