#34: First Olympic Gold Medal
The Olympics have been around in some form since the Ancient Greeks. However, the Greek Olympic games from 776 BCE look much different than our modern-day competitions. There were no gold medals, for one thing. That’s why the 1904 Olympic Games have gone down in history as the first games to award gold medals to the victors.

The 1904 Olympic Games were held in St. Louis, Missouri. All first-place winners received a medal made entirely of gold. That’s one valuable medal if you ask us! This affluent practice didn’t last because making pure gold medals was, unsurprisingly, incredibly expensive. After 1912, gold medals were made from silver and coated in a layer of gold.
