#22: The First U.S. National Park
The United States is known for its beautiful national parks. Today, there are 63 national parks protected under the government. But there had to be a first, right? Well, that honor goes to Yellowstone National Park in the western United States. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant made Yellowstone the very first national park in the country.
Before the creation of national parks, areas of pristine, undeveloped land were barely protected by the government. In the 1800s, many authors, nature lovers, and intellectuals joined the popular conservation movement that pushed for national land protection. Today, anyone can visit Yellowstone and experience the staggering beauty of the landscape.
