#10: First Photo of a Presidential Dog
We have breaking news for dog lovers everywhere. This is the oldest-known photograph of a U.S. President’s dog. Most U.S. Presidents throughout history have had pet dogs live with them in the White House. Based on the fact that this presidential dog got his own portrait, we humans have always been obsessed with our dogs.
Although we don’t have an exact date for this photo, historians believe this photo is of President Abraham Lincoln’s dog, Fido. Yes, his name really was Fido. President Lincoln set the precedent for this common name! Fido was a beloved dog, but unfortunately, he didn’t adjust to life in the White House very well. The Lincoln family ended up rehoming Fido with a family friend so that he could be outdoors and enjoy a more relaxed life. Apparently, they snapped this photo before Fido’s big move.
