#17: The First Democratically-Elected Female President
World history has been full of queens, princesses, and female pharaohs, but there have been far fewer democratically elected women. In fact, the first woman elected as president didn’t happen until 1980. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir became the fourth president of Iceland in 1980 and served in office until 1996.
In addition to becoming the first woman in the world elected as president, Finnbogadóttir is also the longest-serving elected female head of state in history. She served as Iceland’s president for 16 years, which doesn’t seem that long in the grand scheme of things. Who knows what the future may hold for our future leaders? After all, records are meant to be broken.
