#15: The First Mount Everest Summit
Mount Everest is one of the most challenging mountains to climb. Today, over 6,000 people have reached the summit of Mount Everest, but back in the 1950s, it was perceived as an impossible task by most of the world. Mountaineer Edmund Percival Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first confirmed climbers to reach the top of Mount Everest.
Hillary and Norgay reached the summit on May 29, 1953. This was a huge achievement for mountaineer enthusiasts everywhere. While Hillary was an avid adventurer, Norgay had actually made six other attempts to summit Mount Everest. He had worked on previous European-led expeditions that didn’t reach the top. So, Hillary and Norgay may have been the first two men to summit Everest, but Norgay did it while hauling everyone else’s cargo.
