#38: Breaking the Sound Barrier
Considering the fast pace of technological advancement, someone eventually had to break the sound barrier. That honor goes to Air Force Captain Charles Yeager, who was the first human to surpass the speed of sound on October 14, 1947. Yeager piloted an experimental aircraft called the Bell X-1 Glamorous Glennis.

The Bell X-1 reached 700 miles per hour, allowing Yeager to surpass the speed of sound. It was an incredible feat that had never been achieved before. Yeager was chosen to fly this experimental aircraft because he was the most experienced Air Force pilot with test flight experience. After breaking the sound barrier, Yeager said, “The real barrier wasn’t in the sky but in our knowledge and experience of supersonic flight.”
