#11: The First Miss America
Whether you like it or not, the Miss America pageant has become synonymous with American culture. The first iteration of Miss America occurred in 1921 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The pageant was organized on the boardwalk as a way to attract more tourists during the Labor Day holiday.
The first Miss America pageant had less than 15 contestants. Margaret Gorman became the first “Miss America” when she won the competition. You can see Gorman, who was only sixteen years old, with an iconic crown on her head and a fabulous flapper gown. At the time, she was originally crowned “The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America.” This title sounds creepy through a modern lens, so we’re glad they changed it to “Miss America.”
