#24: The First Darwin Award
Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution brought about the idea of natural selection, popularly known as “survival of the fittest.” In 1993, a group of people formally introduced The Darwin Awards to the world as a tongue-in-cheek way to make fun of people who make very bad decisions. In order to win a Darwin Award, you have to do something so dumb that it eliminates you from the gene pool, improving the human race’s chance at long-term survival.
Needless to say, winning this award is not an honor. The first person to win this satirical award was an anonymous man who accidentally died after knocking over a vending machine. He was trying to grab a soda out of the machine when it tipped over and crushed him to death. Poor guy.
