Caril Ann Fugate
”Caril Ann Fugate had Sunday dinner with my family back in the late 60s or early 70s. We lived in York, Nebraska (where she was serving time at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women), and it was some kind of church-related, obviously approved brief time away from the prison for her. Until this day, I have no idea why that even happened. Still, I remember she was very polite and quiet – the kind of quiet that is almost disturbing, like she’s hiding this disturbing personality behind her shyness.”
Caril Ann Fugate is a name that many true crime enthusiasts will recognize. She was the 14-year-old girlfriend of Charles Starkweather, a notorious spree killer who went on a killing spree across the American Midwest in the late 1950s. What’s surprising is that Fugate herself was just a teenager at the time, and it’s still a matter of debate as to what role she played in the murders. Some believe that she was a victim of Starkweather’s manipulation and abuse, while others think that she was a willing accomplice who actively participated in the killings.
