Isn’t This How Normal People Live?
I’m increasingly convinced that Hollywood types are completely disconnected from how the real world works. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the houses that they put people in in movies and TV shows. Maybe they want their characters to seem to live glamorous lives, or maybe they’re out of touch enough to think that mansions are normal, but whatever the reason, they love putting characters into apartments and houses that they would never actually be able to afford on their salaries.
A famous and egregious example is from the TV show Friends. Monica lives in a stunning and large apartment in New York City and manages to afford it despite neither she nor her housemate (who varies throughout the show) having jobs that would allow them to afford it. But they are by no means the only show to fall into this trap. I guess it’s not as much fun to watch a show about someone who lives in a tiny hole in the wall.
