There Has to Be Something Good to Watch
Most of us are inclined to think that more choices are always a good thing. Well, I am here to register my controversial opinion that it is possible to have too many choices… at least where movies and TV shows are concerned. Has this ever happened to you? You decided to sit down and watch a movie on Netflix, so you start scrolling through the catalog, but nothing seems quite right. You know that somewhere out there is a movie that will sound perfect, so you scroll for two hours and then it’s time to go to bed.
On the other hand, if you’d had three DVDs to choose from, I bet you could have chosen one pretty quick. The more choices we have, the more likely we are to think that among that pile is the perfect option. It’s the weird contradiction of Netflix: thousands and thousands of titles to choose from sometimes results in you not choosing any of them. Or, equally likely, you look through thousands of shows you haven’t seen yet and end up deciding just to rewatch The IT Crowd for the fifteenth time.
