There’s a Reason For The Roman Numerals
Half of us have let our grade school lessons on reading Roman numerals slip into our mental recycling bins, while the other half only remember a small handful of them thanks to too many hours in front of the PlayStation with the Final Fantasy Series or Dragon Quest. So, why does the NFL insist on making us revisit Roman numerals for a game we could easily name after the year?
Believe it or not, we would be more confused if they didn’t. Like winter, football season bleeds from one year into the next. Roman numerals clear up any confusion over the timeline because seasons are referred to by the year they begin, not when they end. Naming it Super Bowl 2022 would lead people to mistake it for the Super Bowl of the 2022 season. Roman numerals simplify the order.
