Why We Call It The Super Bowl
The NFL and NCAA have more bowls than a soup kitchen, leaving organizers responsible for giving each of them a name fans will remember. College bowls tend to go for the names that get our mouths watering like the Peach Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and the Orange Bowl. The NFL, on the other hand, stuck with the Super Bowl.
The name feels a little basic, but it has surprising roots. It wasn’t plucked out of a hat full of exciting words or voted on in a boardroom. It was born of inspiration from a 70s toy that former Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt’s daughter played with. That toy was called SuperBall, and now we have the Super Bowl.
