Advertisers Shell Out Millions For Airtime
While most people tune in to the Super Bowl to watch the two surviving teams of the season duke it out, others are just there for the wings, the halftime show, and the ads that jerk our emotions around like a carnival ride. As the popularity of the ads has risen, so has the cost of the bidding war amongst companies looking to air their ads during the game.
The cost to air a commercial on national television hovers around $115,000 for a 30-second spot on a typical day, but a Super Bowl commercial averages as much as $5.6 million, which is astronomically higher than the $37,500 average in 1967 (That’s $313,026 in 2022 dollars). The prices continue to surge and show no signs of slowing down, even when there’s a dip in viewers.
