#44: In for a Penny
This next one might sound surprising to you if you have never thought about it before, but getting rid of the penny is actually a widespread debate. With inflation, pennies are worth less and less every year: my grandma could get a peppermint stick for a penny when she was a kid, I could get a gumdrop for a penny when I was a kid, but these days, you would have to pool a few pennies together to get even the smallest piece of candy.
This decrease in value means that it now costs the government more money to produce the penny than it is worth; the government loses money with each penny it produces, with the annual losses being in the millions of dollars. Several bills have been introduced to eliminate the penny, but none of them have passed. Personally, I think it’s an idea whose time has come.
