45. Schindler’s List (1993)
This is one of the more sobering films on the list, but it is an important film nonetheless. It was published as Shindler’s Ark in 1982 by Australian writer Thomas Keneally, but when it was sold in the United States, it was renamed Schindler’s List.
It follows the story of Oskar Schindler, a real person with aspects that were fictionalized for drama and to enhance the story. Steven Spielberg was interested in the novel when it was brought to his attention, but he was reluctant to be the one to direct it. Eventually, after unsuccessful attempts to give it to someone else, he shot the film, and it was released in 1993.
