40. Psycho (1960)
Alfred Hitchcock is one of the staple filmmakers of Hollywood, famous for his thrillers and ability to build suspense through his scenes. One of his arguably most famous films, however, is 1960’s Psycho. It has been influential enough on culture for its infamous shower murder scene that it has spawned countless parodies and imitations.
It was originally based on a novel of the same name, written by Robert Bloch, as he imagined that the man next door could secretly be a monster. He lived just 35 miles away from a town where a real murderer–Ed Gein–would be arrested, and when Gein’s crimes came to light, there were surprising similarities to the villain Norman Bates.
