43. Trainspotting (1996)
Trainspotting was written by Scottish novelist Irvine Welsh in 1993. Rather than a full-length novel, it is instead formed as a collection of short stories. It took some time to gain success, eventually achieving a cult status among fans.
It was adapted into a movie that was released in 1996 and starred Ewan McGregor. The film was met with a critical success that would launch both itself and the novel to global audiences. Both had sequels, though the second film was only loosely based on the book, as the director did not feel the novel’s sequel was as good as the first.
