38. The Bridge Over the River Kwai (1957)
The Bridge over the River Kwai is a French war novel by Pierre Boulle. It is a fictional story inspired by a real event and place for its historical setting, based on the construction of a bridge over the Mae Klong River. The part of the river where the bridge was supposedly renamed Khwae Yai.
The bridge itself was dubbed the “Death Railway” due to the number of conscripts, prisoners of war, and civilians who died while building it. The film was an adaption of the novel, and the writers for the film had to work in secret on the project as they had been blacklisted from Hollywood.
