#33: See You Later, Alligator
This next picture shows two alligators, but they don’t look like the ones we’re all familiar with! That’s because these are melanistic and albino alligators, characterized by rare genetic variations. Melanistic alligators- the black alligator in the photo – exhibit an excess of melanin pigment, resulting in an almost black coloration of their scales.
Albino alligators lack melanin entirely, resulting in a striking white or pale yellow appearance with pinkish eyes. These unique variations occur due to genetic mutations and can occur naturally or through selective breeding in captivity. Both melanistic and albino alligators are highly prized for their rarity and are often featured in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries.
