#16: Quite Unappetizing
When opening this brown paper bag, one could be forgiven for mistaking its contents for all kinds of things, from exfoliating soap to white chocolate with peanuts. I think it closely resembles “natto,” the highly contentious Japanese fermented soybean snack that Westerners invariably think is gross and unpalatable.

Yet, if we were to see the outside of the bag, it would be immediately recognizable as microwave popcorn, and once you know that, it all makes sense. Of course, microwave popcorn contains kernels enveloped in a big slab of butter. It may be unexpected, but it sure isn’t surprising.
