Complicated Nuances
This person and his partner don’t experience any sort of racism or microaggressions from strangers. However, they did have uncomfortable interactions with their families when they first started dating. Our storyteller is American Indian, and his partner is Colombian. They both have similar complexions, so strangers who see them together in public usually don’t assume they’re from different cultures.
However, the feelings of their respective families were more nuanced. Our storyteller’s family was upset that he wasn’t dating a woman from the same cultural and ethnic background. His partner’s parents were also upset about the same thing. Thankfully, both sides eventually got over it when they realized they were in it for the long haul.
