The Art of Compromise
There are many inaccurate assumptions and stereotypes about Black women that are rooted in racism. The common “angry Black woman” stereotype is a harmful assumption that actually has tangible negative effects on Black women in their relationships and careers. This storyteller has first-hand experience with those very same assumptions.
Many people are surprised when they learn that she and her white husband have a healthy, normally-functioning relationship. (Cue eye-roll). When people react this way, it’s pretty evident that they assume our storyteller is assertive and makes all the decisions in the relationship. Not only is this wildly inaccurate, but it perpetuates a harmful stereotype.
