A Big Decision
Sometimes your in-laws mean well when they make cringe-worthy remarks. It doesn’t make it any less cringe. This woman and her partner are considering whether or not to have children. She is Black, and her partner is white. Her partner’s parents keep encouraging them to have kids for unintentionally stereotypical reasons.
For example, her white in-laws keep saying how cute their biracial babies would be and how good at sports they would be. They mean well, but it definitely makes our storyteller uncomfortable. On top of that, she is concerned that the maternal mortality rate for Black women is three times higher than for white women. It’s a big decision, and her partner’s family isn’t helping.
