#41: Abner Doubleday
Abner Doubleday, a remarkable figure in American history, holds a hallowed place as the revered “father of baseball.” Born in Ballston Spa, New York, in 1819, Doubleday’s journey was marked by a distinguished military career in the U.S. Army. He exhibited unwavering courage in the crucible of battle during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, ascending to the prestigious rank of Major General before his well-earned retirement in 1873.

However, Doubleday did not make his indelible mark solely on the battlefield. In a quieter moment in 1839, he penned the earliest known set of rules for the burgeoning sport of baseball, forever cementing his legacy as a founding father of America’s favorite pastime. In a fitting tribute, Abner Doubleday was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, posthumously honoring his pivotal role in shaping the game.
