#16: Ichabod Crane (Colonel)
Ichabod Bennet Crane, a seasoned military officer whose name is likely the inspiration behind the iconic protagonist in Washington Irving’s classic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Born on July 18, 1787, Crane dedicated 48 years to a distinguished military career.
During the War of 1812, Crane served valiantly on the volatile Niagara border. His pivotal role saw him appointed as the commander of an artillery battery at Fort Pike, a fortress he also helped construct in Sackets Harbor, New York. Interestingly, Irving’s famous character, Ichabod Crane, draws his memorable name from the Bible, specifically from the lineage of Eli’s grandson and high priest, a son of Phinehas.
