The Dreaded Product Key
There was nothing more nerve-wracking than entering a product key code for a new Windows operating system. The code, printed on the packaging of the latest and greatest Windows update, was like a secret key to a brave new world. Who knew what lay behind that specific sequence of numbers?
Typing it in was a hugely stressful event. What if you messed up? Would the FBI immediately come to your house and accuse you of pirating Windows 98? Maybe! In all seriousness, product keys are a pretty solid piece of technology. The interface may have changed over the decades, but companies still use them today to verify authenticity and prevent software theft.
