#28: That Doesn’t Sound Pleasant
Chainsaws are handy tools and have also graced the screen of horror movies for an enjoyably terrifying viewing experience. The origin of this tool is a little bit disconcerting in that regard, as it was invented by two doctors in 1780 to assist with childbirth.
It was intended to make it easier and quicker to remove the pelvic bone during childbirth when necessary. The original chainsaw was mechanical, not electric, and was operated by a hand crank that was turned to make the teeth move.
