#21: Inescapable Autos
Full disclosure: If you couldn’t tell, I am one of those bike-riding hippies who feels a just little smug as I sail past all of those cars stuck in traffic, polluting the air with smog and noise. And I encourage everyone I know to get a bike and use it for whatever errands they can.
But that’s a really hard sell in a lot of American cities, because they are all designed for cars. Everything is really spread out, especially because each business needs a parking lot the size of a football field. So, everyone is used to driving, so they don’t want to ride bikes or use public transport, so the cities don’t see any need to invest in bike infrastructure or public transport options.
