How Are Bridges Built?
Racing in a car over a bridge, we might appreciate the ingenuity of human engineering, but do you ever stop to think about how they are constructed? How do they drive the supports into the riverbed? It baffles the mind when you stop and think of it. The answer is amazing.
Behold, the cofferdam. This is a structure built to allow for underwater structures to be built or repaired. It is a giant pit that is set into the ground and then pumped free of water, just as you can see. It looks odd seeing a dry pit in the middle of so much water, doesn’t it?
