#14: A Gentle Beast
Moose, Grizzly bears, and mountain lions are all giant animals, but the largest mammal in the U.S. is the bison, the largest animal walking on land. Beneath the shaggy hair coat, the bison is quite muscular – similar in build to a buffalo. In the photo below, you see only the head of a bison, which is the size of a human body.
If you’re looking for some numbers, adults grow up to 6 feet and 7 inches (2 meters) and weigh anywhere around 880 to 2,800 pounds (400 to 1,270 kilograms). Now, that’s mighty big! Bison behavior is hard to predict, so I’d stay away from these animals; while they often seem calm and even lazy, they might attack unexpectedly at any moment.
