#7: The Statue of Liberty Torch, New York
We all know the Statue of Liberty. It is one of the most famous symbols of the United States, representing the ideals on which the country was founded. A woman with a haloed crown garbed in a robe holding a torch up to enlighten all who come strikes a powerful image.
But while there are ferries to Liberty Island and tours up to the crown, the torch itself has been off-limits for over 100 years. In 1916, a mysterious explosion occurred on Black Time Island in the middle of the night. Shrapnel hit and damaged the statue, and torch visitation was shut down afterward. It’s a shame; the view must be fantastic.
