#10: Pink and White Terraces, New Zealand
This is an incredibly evocative and beautiful scene, and it is such a shame it has been lost to time. The Pink and White Terraces called the Fountain of the Clouded Sky in Maori, are considered by some to be a lost wonder of the world, and it’s easy to tell why.
Just looking at the way it sits jutting out of a mountain, rising in layers into the distant mists, evokes a sort of fairy tale wonder. Tragically, on 10 June 1886, Mount Tarawera erupted and took the Terraces with it. Not all hope is lost, as some believe to have been discovered under the sea. Only time will tell, but hopefully they will return one day.
