#27: Tipping the Scale
One person made an interesting point about the recent body positivity and body neutrality movements. He tried to argue that women who are overweight are celebrated and glorified, while men who are overweight are called nasty names. Now, any plus-size woman on the internet can tell you that’s absolutely not true. Any woman whose body doesn’t fit into the picture-perfect ideal of what a body “should” look like is bound to get called some ugly names.
Perhaps this guy was putting a voice to his feeling that men aren’t being included in the body positivity movement to the same degree that women are. While there are efforts to include everybody, discussion and celebration do tend to focus on women. There are definitely unhealthy expectations put on both men and women in the media to look a certain way, but women have dealt with the brunt of it for decades. It makes sense that body positivity is more vocal about accepting women’s bodies at the moment.
