#22: Early Diving Suits
The first personal diving suits were born in the thrilling early days of the 18th century when perilous voyages often resulted in treasured ships sinking into the abyss. Fast-forward to the dawn of the 20th century, and these undersea armors had evolved dramatically, opening up the ocean’s mysterious depths to the brave explorers who dared to venture where no man had gone before.
In the roaring 1920s, the ingenious German duo Neufeldt and Kuhnke crafted a marvel of engineering – robust metal diving suits. Their purpose? A daring underwater treasure hunt! The SS Egypt, a British ship laden with precious gold and silver bullion, had tragically sunk in the enigmatic depths of the Celtic Sea in 1922. They aimed to reclaim the sunken bounty from the ship’s watery grave.
