#50: An Elevator’s Secret Message
Many of us take the dings of an elevator for granted. Most of us don’t even register how many dings play as we get on and off. However, there is a very clear intention behind the sounds of an elevator. If you hear a single tone, that means the elevator is going up. If you hear two tones in quick succession, the elevator is going down.
These dings are intended to notify people that the elevator doors are about to open. The different patterns are intended to help people with visual impairments navigate getting on and off an elevator. By deciphering a single or double tone, someone can tell if the elevator is going up or down.
